8.3 Beer and chocolate

In a land where “The highest mountains are the churches’ steeples”, the water doesn’t flow and beer was originally a safe and nutritious drink for our ancestors; chocolate came first as a pharmaceutical product but soon became a real pleasure.

Now both products occupy a major place in the daily life of Belgian people.

1st day Brussels

  • AM: Sightseeing including the Law Court, the Royal Palace, Brussels Park, the St. Hubert Galleries, Mannekenpis, the St. Michel Cathedral, the Sablon squares and the Grand Place with its guilds’ houses where the Guild Beer Museum is situated.
  • PM: The excursion will continue to the visit of the Cantillon Brewery, a family of craft brewers who will introduce you to the traditional production of Gueuze-Lambic, a typical and famous local beer.

2nd day Bruges

  • AM: Sightseeing in Bruges to visit the Grote Markt, the Belfry and Halles, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, the City Hall, the Beguinage, the Lake of Love, and to enjoy a canal cruise followed by the discovery of the local brewery Halve Maan.
  • PM: The Bruges Chocolate museum then free time for shopping or to enjoy your personal interests in the city.

3rd day Antwerp

  • AM: Antwerp city centre, with the Grand Place, City Hall, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Rubens’ house and the diamond district.
  • PM: Visit to Duvel brewery to discover one of the faster growing breweries in the country and of course to taste their local products.
    Accommodation in Brussels.

4th day Leuven

  • AM: To start a full day’s sightseeing in and near the historical city of Leuven, discovering the birthplace of the biggest brewery group in the world: AB InBev.
  • PM: Then a visit of Leuven, the oldest and the biggest Belgian University Town. The loveliest spots are the town’s main square, the Market Place, the late medieval heart of the town with St. Peter’s church and the Town Hall.

5th day Ardennes

  • AM: This will be a full day’s trip to the luxuriant landscapes of the Ardennes. First to Namur then to Dinant with its unique church and scenery, then a visit to the traditional and famous local cookie makers and also the birthplace of Leffe beer.
  • PM: In the afternoon we will reach Rochefort Abbey with its famous Trappist beer then head on to the wonderful castle of Modave.
    Accommodation in Brussels.

Lunches and dinners are selected according to proposals.
Guides and assistants can escort all transfers and sightseeing.
Changes to accommodation location are possible.
